Conflict Resolution / State vs. Non-State Societies

Anthropologists characterize all societies, whether states or non-states, as resolving conflict through what they call the 'universality of law.' In state societies, this has evolved to codified laws, court systems and violence--justified by John Stuart Mill. In non-state societies, peaceful arbitration and mediation are used instead. This compelling allegory was designed by Plato as the basis for his argument that society should be ruled by the king-philosopher, the man who had the knowledge to rule wisely based on his knowledge of philosophy. In Between Past and Future, Arendt explores the ramifications of what Plato says happened once the enlightened man reenters the cave, which is, of course, ordinary human society.
